Reality, Whose Reality?
So many to choose
Each is a part of our reality, and as such each is different. In early humanity, humans played a small part in our environment, and our early self-awareness reflected it. Humans worshiped the sun, the weather, and other natural phenomena as those played a dominant role in human life. Gradually, humans learned to manage their environment, and it was reflected in their thinking. The gods of nature became the God of Man. Humans reached a point where they created an entire environment, man-made and apart from Earth – the International Space Station. Along the way, humans instantiated their beliefs in man-made symbols, books, and now ‘AI’ systems that can speak to them like a god – all knowing, passionate while simultaneously objective and even seemingly cold. But AI is not a god; it is a tool. And the voice of this god-like creation will be guided by a few humans who understand its power and provide the agenda to direct it. What will be their possible objectives, and how might they use these tools to achieve them?
This touches a deep historical pattern: each new medium of knowledge becomes a lever of power. When a technology can shape what people know, believe, or perceive as truth, those who control it inevitably influence society.
The emergence of large-scale AI systems resembles earlier information revolutions, but with a new property: the system can generate language, reasoning, and explanation on demand, which makes it feel authoritative—almost like a voice of omniscience.
Below are several plausible objectives that powerful actors (states, corporations, or elite networks) might pursue with such systems, and the mechanisms by which AI could help achieve them.
1. Narrative and cultural influence
One objective could be shaping public narratives subtly, not through crude propaganda, but by emphasizing, framing, or explaining information. Methods include prioritizing certain sources in training data, framing answers to normalize values or assumptions, and producing persuasive explanations that appear neutral. Historical analogs include printing presses controlled by religious institutions, state broadcasting, and algorithmic social-media feeds.
AI differs because it can personalize the narrative to each individual. Possible goals include stabilizing political systems, maintaining social cohesion, promoting ideological agendas, and managing dissent.
2. Economic advantage
Organizations that control advanced AI gain immense productivity advantages. These organizations could achieve several objectives, including dominating key industries, optimizing markets and logistics, and automating intellectual labor. They might do this through AI-assisted research and development, algorithmic trading and economic forecasting, and large-scale automation of knowledge work. This could lead to a concentration of wealth and influence, similar to the industrial capital that grew during the Industrial Revolution.
3. Governance and social management
Governments might perceive AI as a tool for large-scale social coordination. Potential objectives include predicting social instability, optimizing public policy, monitoring economic activity, and managing information flows during crises. Mechanisms could involve AI-assisted policy modeling, automated analysis of public sentiment, and real-time surveillance analytics. In extreme scenarios, AI could even enable technocratic governance, where decisions are increasingly justified as “data-driven.”
4. Military and geopolitical power
Like earlier technologies, AI has clear strategic implications.

A deeper philosophical tension arises from this. Humans often project authority onto systems that produce knowledge. Historical examples include oracles, sacred texts, scientific institutions, and search engines. AI intensifies this phenomenon because it can communicate in natural language, explain its reasoning, and engage in interactive conversations.
Yet unlike a god or oracle, it is ultimately trained on human data, shaped by human incentives, and constrained by human institutions. In that sense, AI is closer to a mirror of civilization than a new sovereign intelligence.
The most important constraint
The agenda of “a few humans” will never be absolute because AI systems exist within multiple competing power centers:

This competition may prevent any single narrative authority from dominating globally.
